Jon Royle's What I Like
Hi,
I'm Jon Royle, an avid music fan all of my life.
Having come from a musical family, there's been no avoiding the obvious.
My Grandmother's influence gave me a strong grounding and appreciation for music of many genres. She was a fabulous Church organist, my Great Uncle a talented Jazz pianist. As a youngster, I loved hearing my Elders perform.
This led to my personal involvement as a musician, highly influenced by all that I had heard on radio during the 1950's. I taught myself to play guitar
modelled on the Folk music of the early 60's and left school to pursue my music career. I worked at many different jobs to maintain my passion for performance. My first band was formed at school . I was lucky enough to catch a few breaks as a performer during my teen years.
It was a crazy life...By the time I had a drivers licence, I headed straight for the coast to follow my growing passion for surfing and the ocean. Music was
always with me. A car, a surfboard and a guitar...my life was full and happy.
Many years of playing covers gradually subsided as I began composing original songs. A few breaks later found me in the recording studio. This was all a result of Radio as I'd been asked to present non-existing demo's for broadcasting
purposes.
Public radio began shining upon my horizons. Many local Community
Radio stations supported my work , this was truly gratifying although I found myself challenged when I had to give up performing to undertake full time
caring for my ailing Mother. By the time I was ready to recommence my
performing career, I'd suffered a part palsy to my left hand which virtually
finished off my lifelong passion for live performance.
After 3 years deliberation, I decided to undertake a challenge of becoming a
radio program presenter. The chance to pay back all those who had supported me in kind. The opportunity to offer support to those who were talented but
unrecognised. I'm loving discovering and exposing quality artists who would otherwise 'fly under the radar' of mainstream music radio stations. Only on Community Radio can I be this self indulgent.
If you want to hear something new, if you want to hear quality musicianship, quality songwriting, quality artistry. this is WHAT I LIKE ..the show for you!
I look forward to your company on Radio Port Phillip.
catch you then!
