The Disability Shop
The Disability Shop first went to air on May 19th, 2008. It was conceived because there did not appear to be a regular information show about disability anywhere in the media in the way this one is produced. With 720,000 or more Australians on Disability Support Pensions, it is seen as reasonable to expect that about 1:5 of 3RPP's listening population will have some form of disability i.e. physical, intellectual etc. Yet, nowhere else on the air waves, within reach, is there a program about the issues which can be important to these people.
The program aims to be understood by all ages, and socio economic levels. It tries to provide information on many aspects of disability including service delivery, education, discussion and simply news. Its format deliberately keeps talking to easily assimilated periods of up 9 minutes or so. Three or four tracks of music are played and news items read out. Occasionally, field interviews are played but live on air interviews are preferred. Listeners are encouraged to e-mail comments and questions to the presenter. The programme presenter is a former General Manager of Yooralla, with many years of close contact with disability services and issues.
Since the first broadcast, The Disability Shop has enabled listeners to hear guests including people from Alkira, Yooralla, E.W Tipping Foundation, Skillsplus, ARBIAS, WDRN, LISA, Neighborhood Connections, Peninsula Health and Frankston Hospital, Disability Opportunities Victoria, State Autism Services, ARBIAS, Diabetes Victoria, Riding For The Disabled, Post Polio, and Mary Wooldridge Vic Shadow Minister, as well as many carers, and a number of people with disabilities. We have discussed strokes, autism, brain injury, diabetes, respite and recreation for disabled, housing, care issues, dementia, abuse, quality assurance, funding, and many other aspects of disability. We provide weekly media highlights about events for people with disabilities. Our guests have included people with disabilities as well service providers carers, and government.
The program is well supported by individuals, carers, people with disability, professionals in the disability industry, and by service organisations. The only thing we ask is that you help by listening, giving information, and suggestions, and offering to be on air.
